Staff

Farmington State Normal School had exceptional leadership during this period. W.G. Mallett as principal built upon the reputation which had been built under the previous fifty years of the institution. Additionally, many of the faculty members acted as strong leaders in academics and extracurricular activities. Many are remembered today by campus buildings named in their honor.1 The faculty and staff members listed here were those who worked for the school during the 1916-1917 school year.2

W.G. Mallett, Principal

Wilbert G. Mallett was the principal of Farmington State Normal School from 1909-1940. In addition, he taught Pedagogy, Psychology, and Civics.

Arthur M. Thomas, Assitant Principal

Arthur M. Thomas was the Assistant Principal and taught Natural Sciences.

Hortense M. Merrill was the instructor of English and History.

Katherine E. Abbott taught Drawing, Home Decoration, Geometry, Algebra, and Botany.

Carolyn Stone, Natural Sciences

Carolyn A. Stone instructed Physiology, Physical Culture, Biology, Arithmetic, and Psychology.

Virginia A. Porter

Virginia A, Porter was the English, Geography, Penmanship, and U.S. History instructor.

Agnes P. Mantor

Agnes P. Mantor was a substitute who later became a full-time staff member.

Margaret Bakeman taught Music.

Gertrude Knight was the Manual Training instructor.

Franca Camp Ingalls taught Arithmetic.

Nina Dudley Palmer taught Reading and Expression

Marion C. Ricker, Household Arts

Marion C. Ricker and Bernadine Cooney split terms as Directors of the Household Arts program.

Frances H. Butler, Maude Van Natta, and Margaret R. Gill were Assistants in the Household Arts program.

Lillian I. Lincoln, Training School

Lillian I. Lincoln was the Supervisor of Training, Pedagogy, and History of Education.

Louise W. Richards was the Assistant Supervisor of Training for grades 7,8 and 9; Marion E. Smart for grades 5 and 6; Pearl H. Sargent for grades 3 and 4; Ruby M. Maloon for 2nd and Clara M. Bacon for grade 1.

Other staff included: Alberta M. Weymouth was the Secretary, W.D. Blake as a janitor, Mrs. L. Estelle Allen as matron of Purington Hall, and Arthur Rowe as a janitor of Purington Hall

1. As of 2014, there Mallett Hall and Stone Hall have been named after F.S.N.S. staff members. A building of classrooms is named Ricker Hall. There are two auditoriums, named in honor of Arthur M. Thomas and Lillian I. Lincoln. The university’s library is named after Agnes P. Mantor.
